'Moss ball' earrings - silver
Containing hand-cut pieces of real preserved moss, lichen, and fungi, these earrings capture all the sparkle of a river in dappled sunlight, and are reminiscent of the camera lens flare that causes the little orbs that appear in stunning photos of sunlit landscapes.
Lichens are not a single organism, but fungi and algae/cyanobacteria working together. They have been used by humans for thousands of years to dye natural materials, form bases for perfumes, and as food. Lichens also provide shelter for tiny invertebrates, and nesting material for bird and mammal species.
Each glass orb-shaped vial is approximately 1.5cm in height, with a resin-sealed gold or silver coloured cap to create an air tight environment inside. Earring hooks with silicone earring backs provide a secure fit with a gentle swing to the earrings to create movement.
